Algeria's south is one of Earth's most spectacular landscapes: golden dunes, prehistoric rock art older than the pyramids, and the blue-veiled Tuareg people. Tassili n'Ajjer is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some 15,000 ancient rock paintings.
Tlemcen was the capital of the Zianid dynasty and a refuge for Muslims leaving Andalusia. El Mechouar Palace, the Great Mosque and the royal ruins of Mansourah make it a living museum of Andalusian-Maghrebi architecture and zellige mosaics.
Some of the best-preserved Roman towns anywhere, kept by a dry climate and centuries of quiet. Djemila and Timgad are UNESCO sites, Tipaza overlooks the Mediterranean, and Hippo Regius in Annaba was home to Saint Augustine.
Five fortified ksour built by the Ibadi Mozabite people from the 11th century, whose cubic, naturally cooled architecture inspired Le Corbusier. A UNESCO site since 1982 and one of North Africa's most distinctive cultural landscapes.
The Kabyle are Algeria's largest Amazigh group, proud and culturally distinct. Their villages cling to mountain ridges, their pottery goes back millennia, and Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, is now a national holiday.
