Constantine, the City of Bridges, sits dramatically above deep gorges spanned by spectacular suspension bridges, blending Roman history with vibrant Algerian culture.
Constantine is one of the oldest cities in the world, continuously inhabited for over 2,500 years. Perched dramatically above the Rhumel Gorge, the city is famous for its series of spectacular bridges that connect the city to its surrounding plateaus — including the iconic Sidi M'Cid Suspension Bridge, one of the highest in the world when built.
The city's medina retains its Ottoman-era architecture, while the nearby archaeological sites of Timgad and Djemila — both UNESCO World Heritage Sites — represent some of the best-preserved Roman ruins anywhere in North Africa. Timgad, founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD, is often called the "African Pompeii."
Constantine is also renowned for its traditional craftsmanship, particularly metalwork and embroidery, and for its unique musical tradition of Malouf, an Andalusian-influenced classical music form recognized by UNESCO. Roza Tour's Constantine tours can be combined with visits to Timgad and Djemila as part of a multi-day eastern Algeria circuit.
