Why Travellers Cross a Continent for One Sunrise

Deep in Algeria's far south, the Hoggar (Ahaggar) Mountains rise out of the Sahara like a hallucination — a landscape of volcanic spires and basalt towers glowing red and violet at dawn. At its heart sits Assekrem, the plateau where the hermit Charles de Foucauld built his refuge in 1911, and where travellers now gather for what many call the most beautiful sunrise on earth.

Getting There

The gateway is Tamanrasset ("Tam" to locals), reached by domestic flight from Algiers in about two hours. From Tamanrasset, the Assekrem plateau is a half-day 4x4 journey through the Ahaggar National Park — a route that is itself one of the great desert drives, past gardens of twisted rock and Tuareg encampments.

The Assekrem Experience

Most itineraries reach Assekrem in the late afternoon, in time for sunset, then overnight in the simple refuge below the plateau. The main event comes before dawn: a 20-minute walk up to the hermitage, then the slow ignition of the entire Hoggar range as the sun climbs — hundreds of peaks turning from black to ember-red to gold. Bring warm layers; pre-dawn temperatures on the plateau are cold even in spring.

When to Go

October to April is the season. Winter (December–February) offers the clearest air and the most dramatic light, with cold nights. Avoid June–August entirely — the deep south is dangerously hot.

How Long Do You Need?
